The amount of gold held in custody by Deutsche Börse Commodities GmbH to back the exchange-traded commodity Xetra-Gold today has reached the new record of 80.18 tons, an increase of more than 35 per cent since the beginning of the year. For each Xetra-Gold share, exactly 1 gram of gold is stored in the central vault for German securities in Frankfurt.
Among the 185 exchange-traded commodities (ETCs) tradable on Xetra, Xetra-Gold is by far the most successful in terms of turnover. During the first nine months of the year, order book turnover on Xetra stood at more than €1.06 billion. Xetra-Gold currently has almost €3 billion in assets under management (AuM).
In September 2015, the Federal Fiscal Court (Bundesfinanzhof) had ruled that after a minimum holding period, any profits from the sale or redemption of Xetra-Gold are not subject to the capital gains tax. From a fiscal point of view, the purchase, redemption or sale are thus to be treated just like a direct purchase or sale of physical gold, such as in gold bullions or coins.
